What is prayer?

Simply put, prayer is communication with God, it's having a conversation with God. As with your best friend, you talk and you listen and you become closer in your relationship.

Prayer is not trying to twist God's arm or make Him do something that He doesn't want to.

Prayer is getting to know God, who He is and what He wants to do.

Prayer is at its highest and noblest when its purpose is not to get something but to get closer to someone.

Prayer engages the God of miracles in your everyday life. When you bring your life to God, when you talk to Him about it and how much you want Him to be a part of it, you literally invite Him to step into your world - and He does!

The Bible makes no apology for prayer. Different characters and different personalities throughout the Bible pray - we can take it that God expects and assumes that we will pray to Him!

It should be our number one discipline if we call ourselves disciples. Martin Luther said, 'As a shoemaker makes shoes and a tailor makes clothes so every Christian ought to pray. Prayer is the daily business of every Christian.'

Why pray?

Prayer is so powerful!

  • It connects us to God
    • It causes us to see things from His perspective
    • It takes us outside the law of nature
  • It humbles us and keeps us from becoming conceited
  • It strengthens us - God's strength
  • It exercises our faith
  • It keeps us from falling into temptation
  • It releases us into ministry
  • It strengthens others
  • It releases the Baptism of the Holy Spirit
  • It puts words in our mouths
  • It positions us to receive revelation
  • It releases people from prison
  • It brings in God's Kingdom
  • It releases God's grace

How can we pray?

Jesus gave us a great model for praying to God in Luke 11:1-4; The Lord's Prayer

Our Father: prayer begins with relationship, a really close one of father and child

In heaven: we know where He is; the search is over

Hallowed be Your name: we recognise how holy He is; He is set apart and given praise.

Your Kingdom come, Your will be done: we recognise that God is supreme; His ways are perfect, right and good and far above our own - so we want His plan and will for our lives

Give us this day our daily bread: we know our Father God loves us and looks after us and any need in our life, great or small, can be provided by God when we engage Him in our lives

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those: We can put things right with God, we can say sorry for everything that we have messed up in and we know that He has forgiven us - but we in turn should forgive others

Lead us not into temptation: we want God to protect us and teach us how to discipline ourselves and guard our hearts

Now all you need to do is book a slot and begin praying!
